Pleonasm and hypercharacterization

First, hypercharacterization will be distinguished from redundancy, pleonasm and reinforcement. A set of phenomena of hypercharacterization will be reviewed and classified. The leading questions are: •= What is the function of hypercharacterization? •= What is the role of hypercharacterization in the various components of the linguistic system, in particular in inflection and word-formation? The theoretical basis of a satisfactory account will be sought in a holistic, rather than analytic, approach to linguistic structure, where an operator-operand structure is formed by considering the nature of the result, not of the operand.
